Henry Lem completed his doctoral degree in Chinese language and literature in 2019. His research focuses on the connection between storytelling, branding, and interpretation in the literature and commercial publishing market of late imperial China. Henry's research interests include late imperial Chinese fiction, Neo-Confucianism, publishing culture, and hermeneutics. He is currently working on four projects: 1) A monograph that explores how fictional representations of masculinity were related to the literati’s changing concept of personhood and their frustrations with the realities of moral decline, rebellion, and corrupt governance in late imperial China. 2) A research article that investigates the travel literature of the late Qing from the perspective of Sinophone literature, including the writings of thinker and reformer Wang Tao (1828-1897) who lived and traveled to several places in his lifetime, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Japan, and Scotland. 3) A research article that investigates the use of and contradiction with "tradition" in the literary criticism of Lu Xun, specifically Lu Xun's attention to evolutionary aspects of literary genres and categorizations thereof. 4) Translations of Six Dynasties poetry, including the landscape poetry of Xie Lingyun (384-433).
